96 consecutive inborn neonates with blood culture proven bacterial sepsis during the period January to June 1997 were studied. Lethargy with refusal of feeds (28%), fever (28%) and respiratory distress (31.3%) were the major presenting features. Half of them (n = 48) were of early onset (< 48 hours) and the remaining half were of late onset (> 48 hours). Staphylococcus aureus (n = 59, 61.5%) was the predominant pathogen and 66% of them were methicillin resistant followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 24, 21.9), Escherichia coli (n = 13, 13.5%) and streptococci (n = 3, 3.1%). Antibiotic resistance was common, with the sensitivity to various antibiotics being ampicillin 19%, gentamicin 21.6%, cefotaxime 32.8%, amikacin 50%, chloromycetin 59.6% and ciprofloxacin 90.3%.

Minimally invasive surfactant therapy (MIST) is the accepted way of surfactant administration in Europe, and in 2018, we reported its successful outcome with three babies in Dubai. Although this procedure minimizes the barotrauma associated with intubation for surfactants, threading the fine infant-feeding tube is perceived to be technically difficult. Semi-rigid catheters like the angiocath and the less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) catheter simplify the procedure. We have used successfully the smallest size of endotracheal tube available (2.0 mm) as a surrogate LISA catheter in our neonatal unit in Dubai. We present herein the simplicity and ease of this procedure versus the conventional LISA or MIST technique.
Background: Undetected and untreated mental disorders can impair a person’s ability to perform at school or work place, cope with daily activities of life and can lead to severe psychiatric disorders and consequences later in their life. Study objective was to determine the prevalence and patterns of depression, anxiety and stress among 400 school going adolescents belonging to classes 10th to 12th of Tirunelveli district, Tamilnadu, India.Methods: Burden of Depression, anxiety and stress was assessed using DASS21 questionnaire. Chi-square test was done using SPSS software version 21 to test for statistical significance.Results: Overall prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress was 73.6%, 86.5% and 24.7% respectively. Depression (p value=0.01), Anxiety (p value = 0.005) and stress (p value = 0.007) were significantly observed more among 10th class students when compared with other classes.Conclusions: The present study has identified a higher prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among students. This warrants immediate action of creating awareness among teachers and parents in early identification and treatment to prevent serious consequences in later life.
