Melatonin is a neurohormone that is secreted in the brain and which is associated with the sleep cycle, its clinical uses have been focused on sleep disorders, as well as on the improvement of cognitive performance and people's mood. Likewise, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been used in the same areas. The objective of this research was to analyze for two weeks, in young adults with an average age of 24 (the minimum age was 18 and the maximum was 32), which of the two treatments was more effective in inducing improvements in sleep quality, memory and mood. Four groups were formed, the placebo group (n=28), the sham group (n=28), the melatonin group (n=25) and the TMS group (n=16). All groups had a pre-test evaluation of sleep quality, memory, depression and anxiety. The experimental phase lasted 2 weeks and consisted of placebo exposure, sham stimulation, melatonin consumption (10 mg) and TMS (128 Hz). After this period, the post-test evaluation was carried out. The results showed that both treatments were equally effective in improving sleep quality, although TMS was more effective in improving memory and anxiety symptoms. It is inferred that both treatments are effective, although the question arises about their long-term use and the maintenance of the improvements.
The interest in breasts in our society can hardly escape the attention of even a casual observer. It has been found that women with larger breasts than the average were considered to be more physically attractive and have greater social outcomes. Some women consider themselves less beautiful or feminine because of the lack of “ideal” size and shape. This feeling of inadequacy may lead to lowered levels of self-esteem and sexuality.Although not extensively researched, psychologic factors have attributed to the dramatic increase in the number of performed breast augmentation procedures. As this number continues to rise it is important that healthcare providers comprehend the degree to sexuality may affect their patients’ outcomes. This review is designed to provide an overview of the psychological and sexuality literature on cosmetic breast augmentation. It seems to exist a positive effect of breast augmentation surgery on woman's sexuality, as well in other psychological aspects. This relation need to be explored further in future studies.
In the post partum period many changes happen to the woman, including in the sexual life. Short-term post partum sexual problems are highly prevalent. Even though all kinds of dysfunction can arise, the most frequent are hypoactive sexual desire, vaginal dryness, orgasmic dysfunction and dyspareunia. The aim of this poster is to overview six main etiological factors of the post partum sexual dysfunction: hormonal changes and breastfeeding, perineal trauma, fatigue, changes in social role, partner interaction and mood. The knowledge of these etiological factors and identification of the risk factors are important weapons in the prevention and approach to post partum sexuality by the couple and health professionals.
IntroductionEmotional intelligence is defined as the ability to process, understand and manage emotions. In bipolar disorder seem to be more conserved, with less functional impairment than other severe mental disorders as schizophrenia. So far, there are few studies analyzing emotional intelligence in bipolar disorder.ObjectiveThe objective of this research is to better understand the different characteristics and the factors affecting these social-cognitive dysfunctions in bipolar disorder.AimsTo explore possible factors related to emotional intelligence in these severe mental disorders: symptoms, cognitive functioning, quality of life and psychosocial function.Material and methodsTwenty-six adults bipolar type I patients were examined using MSCEIT (the most validated test for emotional intelligence), BPRS, YMRS, HDRS, WAIS-IV, TMT and Rey Figure in order to determine the level of emotional intelligence and factors relate.ResultsBipolar patients show lack of emotional intelligence when compared with general population. Cognitive impairment and age are the principal factors related.DiscussionResults are discussed and compared with recent literature.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
Pedophilia is defined as a recurrent sexual attraction towards pre-pubescent children. It is a serious and ubiquitous problem with clinical, social, moral and legal implications. The aim of this poster is to describe the factors that are most often associated with this paraphilia and to analyse some of the proposed etiological theories. In the past, etiological theories gave more importance to environmental factors, but recent studies have emphasized more and more the importance of neurobiological factors.Even though several factors have been identified, there are very few certainties when it comes to their role in the etiology of this disease and most of the proposed theories have a speculative nature.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
