thought that a more detailed account of the execution of the works, of the plant and material used, and of the difficulties encountered, would have proved useful and instructive. I t appeared that 87,000 tons of cement were used, but it was not stated what specification was adopted, nor whether many tons were rejected. It would also be interesting to have a short description of the dredging plant engaged, and the cost per cubic metre of dredging and depositing. He agreed that the best plan of disposing of the hard tosca dredged from the channel Fig. 20. would have been to fit barges with iron boxes. At Dundee 4,000,000 tons o f dredged material had been so disposed of in the last 30 years, and 78 acres of ground had been reclaimed from the river. The dredgers discharged into bottomless box punts, each of which contained thirty boxes having a capacity of 43 cubic feet each. The punts when loaded were towed to the reclamation wharf, and the boxes were lifted individually by a 4-ton derrick crane and tipped into wagons (Pig. 20). The total cost amounted to 8d. per ton, made up as follows :-Dredging, 21,d. ; towing, l@. ; depositing, 4d.
