SYNOPSIS
A case of orotic aciduria is reported and the clinical features reviewed. Replacement therapy with uridine achieved a striking clinical and haematological remission. Early diagnosis is important in preventing the occurrence of mental retardation.
A 2 year old female infant was admitted with a short history of vomiting yellow-brown material and passing yellow urine. Acute poisoning with Pyridium was suspected on clinical grounds and later demonstrated chemically. She developed methaemoglobinaemia which responded well to methylenc blue intravenously and saline enemata. She also had evidence of haemolysis and transient renal toxicity, but she made a complete recovery. Sand, R. E. and Edelmann, C. M. Jr. (1961). Pyridium-induced rnethemoglobinemia. 1.
