Die Frage nach der biochemischen Bedeutung der ungesättigten Fettsäuren wurde experimentell angreifbar anläßlich der Prüfung des klinischen Sonderproblems, ob Azidosis und Acetonkörperbildung durch eine Diät zurückzudrängen sind, bei der an Stelle der natürlichen geradzahligen Fettsäuren ungeradzahlige gegeben werden. Verkade 1 ) hat inzwischen wissenschaftliche und klinische Literatur darüber zusammenfassend referiert und durch eigene Untersuchung der vorgeschlagenen Präparate "Intarvin" und "Diafett" den von uns nach Kenntnis ihrer Darstellung 2 ) gehegten Verdacht bestätigt, daß in ihnen noch erhebliche Mengen geradzahliger Säuren vorhanden sind. Nachdem S kr a up und Schwamberger 3 ) eine Methode ausgearbeitet hatten, nach welcher zuverlässig nur aus ungeradzahligen Fettsäuren bestehende Präparate zu gewinnen sind, konnten wir an die entscheidende Frage herantreten, ob die (körperfremden) ungeradzahligen Fettsäuren überhaupt wie die natürlichen geradzahligen abgebaut werden.Die Eesorption der Fette aus ungeradzahligen Säuren entspricht der der natürlichen vollständig, wie das Verkade 4 ), Reinwein 5 ) und wir 6 ) übereinstimmend fanden. Einen normalen Abbau dieser Fette sollten nun langdauernde Respirationsversuche am Tier nach Qrafes Methode beweisen oder widerlegen, je nachdem das für natürliche Fette charakteristische Absinken des Respirationsquotienten (RQ.) nach der Fütterung auftrat oder unterblieb.
