Frame building has been described as the flow of frames from political actors to journalists and, thus, to news articles. One influence factor to be considered in the area of framing is media input, which consists of materials that political actors send to newsrooms to facilitate their work while influencing the news. To find out to what extent the government's frames for the Merida Initiative influenced news frames, we identified the issue-specific frames of the initiative, measured their presence in newspapers and media input, and conducted eight cross-lagged correlation analyses. On seven occasions, the correlation went above the baseline. For this reason, it was concluded that the salience of frames in media input had a significant role in the salience of frames in news.
Violence against Mexican journalists has received significant attention from scholars at home and abroad during the last decade. However, though a diversity of issues have been consistently studied, there is one topic that is still largely neglected: the implications of technology for news workers' security and their journalistic practice. Drawing on a set of semistructured interviews with 93 journalists working in 23 of the most dangerous Mexican subnational entities, the aim of this article is to fill that gap. Empirical evidence from all over the country points to a nearly unanimous perception of digital technologies as being a "double-edged knife." This is because electronic devices and social media may be used as a tool for developing better reporting practices, but also as a weapon against journalists, throughfor instanceonline harassment or espionage.
Palabras clave: Framing; periodismo; línea editorial; orientación política.[en] The political orientation of the newspaper and its influence on the presence of frames and issues within the news Abstract. The empirical research in which the role of the political orientation of the newspapers is systematically examined is scarce. The objective of this article is to explore the significance of this variable by comparing the framing and salience of the issue of the Merida Initiative in three Mexican newspapers with different political orientation. To this end, we inductively identified the frames in the reports using a cluster analysis. After that, we compared the salience of the issue, the presence of frame elements and the presence of frames in the three newspapers. Significant differences were found in topics, issue-specific frames and value judgments, all of these attributable to the role of political orientation. Nevertheless, there were similarities in the number of reports devoted to the issue and in the actors mentioned. Keywords: Framing; Merida Initiative; newspapers; political orientation. Sumario. 1.
The absence of gender bias in the media coverage of political campaigns is one of the elements of the much sought after political participation of women. In this respect, Mexico is an interesting case as its legal framework has transitioned in a few years to include a mandated parity principle. In this study, we examine the relationship between the volume of coverage and gender to determine if there were gender differences in the radio coverage of local elections in Mexico (2012-2015). Findings show lower average shares of coverage for women after the increase in female candidates mandated by the parity principle. Semi-structured interviews conducted with journalists and former candidates suggest that the gender bias may reflect adverse attitudes towards female newcomers benefitted by the parity law, and gender differences in campaign resources, candidate placement criteria, and candidates’ political experience.
