O presente trabalho tem por objetivo principal analisar em âmbito estadual a influência da eficiência dos gastos públicos brasileiros sobre o PIB real per capita. Desta forma, o estudo procura evidências empíricas de que quando um estado aumenta sua eficiência do gasto público, este tende para um aumento também no PIB real per capita. Para construção dos indicadores de eficiência, utiliza-se a abordagem não paramétrica Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). A análise faz uso da metodologia de dados em painel por meio do estimador de efeitos fixos por mínimos quadrados ordinários (FE-OLS), do método generalizado de momentos em diferença (DGMM), do método generalizado de momentos em sistema (SGMM). Os resultados apontam que a eficiência do gasto público tem efeito positivo sobre o PIB real per capita. Além disso, o estudo constata que o gasto produtivo do governo também tem efeito positivo sobre o PIB real per capita, e verifica que o gasto improdutivo do governo afeta negativamente o referido produto. As estimações revelaram também que a magnitude dos efeitos dos gastos produtivos e improdutivos sobre o PIB real per capita depende crucialmente do nível de eficiência da administração pública de cada ente federativo. Portanto, o trabalho analisa empiricamente a relação entre eficiência do gasto público e PIB real per capita no Brasil na esfera estadual, com resultados importantes para orientação de políticas públicas.
