ÉTUDE NUMÉRIQUE ET EXPÉRIMENTALE DU SOUDAGE PAR FRICTION MALAXAGE SEPTEMBRE 2012 RESUMELe soudage par friction malaxage (SFM) est une technique de soudure brevetée au début des années 90 qui consiste à souder plusieurs pièces en utilisant un outil cylindrique mis en rotation. Celui-ci pénètre dans les plaques à souder et se déplace le long d'une ligne de soudure tout en gardant le matériau à une température inférieure à son point de fusion. Les avantages de cette approche sont nombreux par rapport à la soudure conventionnelle à l'arc. En effet, puisque la chaleur requise est moindre lors du SFM, les problèmes liés à la fusion du matériau ne se produisent plus, il y a moins de distorsion des matériaux et la microstructure demeure plus uniforme que celles des procédés conventionnels. De plus, la zone affectée thermiquement qui est souvent le maillon faible d'un joint de soudure est beaucoup plus petite ce qui en résulte en des propriétés mécaniques s'approchant de celles du matériau de base. Cette technique gagne donc à être connue, expérimentée et développée surtout pour les alliages d'aluminium reconnus pour être difficilement soudables. Elle est notamment implantée dans divers domaines favorisant l'utilisation de l'aluminium tels que l'aviation, l'automobile, la navigation, le nucléaire et bien d'autres en raison de la meilleure résistance mécanique et de la plus longue durée de vie en fatigue des joints de soudure.Au cours des dix dernières années, divers modèles mathématiques ont été développés pour clarifier l'effet des paramètres de soudage. Cependant, beaucoup d'hypothèses doivent être posées et réduisent la complexité des représentations numériques au profit de la précision des résultats. Le principal problème vient du fait que les logiciels et les méthodes numériques employées ont de la difficulté à bien mailler les conditions limites et les conditions initiales notamment en raison des grandes déformations dans le matériau lors du procédé. Toutefois, une technique sans maillage bien maitrisée par le centre de recherche Commonwealth Scientific and Resarch Organization (CSIRO) pourrait parvenir à contourner ces problèmes. Il s'agit de la méthode Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) où les coordonnées s'adaptent au domaine à chaque itération permettant ainsi d'obtenir l'historique complet de chaque particule en plus de tenir compte de l'emplacement de celles-ci, des contraintes thermiques et des contraintes mécaniques des instants précédents. C'est ainsi dans l'optique d'explorer cette méthode sans maillage que le présent projet est né pour modéliser et comprendre les mécanismes physiques du SFM.En parallèle au développement du modèle numérique SPH, un banc d'essai spécialement instrumenté a été mis en place pour récolter des données sur le soudage par friction malaxage.
