Organic semiconductors are characterized by localized states whose energies are predominantly determined by electrostatic interactions with their immediate molecular environment. As a result, the details of the energy landscape at heterojunctions between different organic semiconductors cannot simply be deduced from those of the individual semiconductors, and they have so far remained largely unexplored. Here, microelectrostatic computations are performed to clarify the nature of the electronic structure and geminate pair energetics at the pentacene/C60 interface, as archetype for an interface between a donor molecule and a fullerene electron acceptor. The size and orientation of the molecular quadrupole moments, determined by material choice, crystal orientation, and thermodynamic growth parameters of the semiconductors, dominate the interface energetics. Not only do quadrupoles produce direct electrostatic interactions with charge carriers, but, in addition, the discontinuity of the quadrupole field at the interface induces permanent interface dipoles. That discontinuity is particularly striking for an interface with C60 molecules, which by virtue of their symmetry possess no quadrupole. Consequently, at a pentacene/C60 interface, both the vacuum‐level shift and geminate pair dissociation critically depend on the orientation of the pentacene π‐system relative to the adjacent C60.

Nanoscale structures, including molecules, supramolecules, polymers, functionalized surfaces, and crystalline/amorphous solids, can commute between two or more forms, displaying contrasts in their nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Because of this property, they have high potential for applications in data storage, signal processing, and sensing. As potential candidates for integration into responsive materials, scientists have been intensely studying organic and organometallic molecules with switchable first hyperpolarizability over the past two decades. As a result of this, researchers have been able to synthesize and characterize several families of molecular NLO switches that differ by the stimulus used to trigger the commutation. These stimuli can include light irradiation, pH variation, redox reaction, and ion recognition, among others. The design of multistate (including several switchable units) and multifunctional (triggered with different stimuli) systems has also motivated a large amount of work, aiming at the improvement of the storage capacity of optical memories or the diversification of the addressability of the devices. In complement to the synthesis of the compounds and the characterization of their NLO responses by means of hyper-Rayleigh scattering, quantum chemical calculations play a key role in the design of molecular switches with high first hyperpolarizability contrasts. Through the latter, we can gain a fundamental understanding of the various factors governing the efficiency of the switches. These are not easily accessible experimentally, and include donor/acceptor contributions, frequency dispersion, and solvent effects. In this Account, we illustrate the similarities of the experimental and theoretical tools to design and characterize highly efficient NLO switches but also the difficulties in comparing them. After providing a critical overview of the different theoretical approaches used for evaluating the first hyperpolarizabilities, we report two case studies in which theoretical simulations have provided guidelines to design NLO switches with improved efficiencies. The first example presents the joint theoretical/experimental characterization of a new family of multi-addressable NLO switches based on benzazolo-oxazolidine derivatives. The second focuses on the photoinduced commutation in merocyanine-spiropyran systems, where the significant NLO contrast could be exploited for metal cation identification in a new generation of multiusage sensing devices. Finally, we illustrate the impact of environment on the NLO switching properties, with examples based on the keto-enol equilibrium in anil derivatives. Through these representative examples, we demonstrate that the rational design of molecular NLO switches, which combines experimental and theoretical approaches, has reached maturity. This review summarizes the current understanding of electrostatic phenomena in ordered and disordered organic semiconductors, outlines numerical schemes developed for quantitative evaluation of electrostatic and induction contributions to ionization potentials and electron affinities of organic molecules in a solid state, and illustrates two applications of these techniques: interpretation of photoelectron spectroscopy of thin films and energetics of heterointerfaces in organic solar cells.

This work demonstrates that the recognition of cations by molecular switches can give rise to large contrasts of the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, which can therefore be used as a powerful and multi-usage detection tool. The proof of concept is given by evidencing, by means of ab initio calculations, the ability of spiropyran/merocyanine systems to selectively detect alkali, alkaline earth, and transition-metal cations.

We report on the recent progress achieved in modeling the electronic processes that take place at interfaces between π-conjugated materials in organic opto-electronic devices. First, we provide a critical overview of the current computational techniques used to assess the morphology of organic:organic heterojunctions; we highlight the compromises that are necessary to handle large systems and multiple time scales while preserving the atomistic details required for subsequent computations of the electronic and optical properties. We then review some recent theoretical advances in describing the ground-state electronic structure at heterojunctions between donor and acceptor materials and highlight the role played by charge-transfer and long-range polarization effects. Finally, we discuss the modeling of the excited-state electronic structure at organic:organic interfaces, which is a key aspect in the understanding of the dynamics of photoinduced electron-transfer processes.

The energetics of electron−hole separation at the prototypical donor−acceptor interface P3HT/PCBM is investigated by means of a combination of molecular dynamics simulations, quantum-chemical methods, and classical microelectrostatic calculations. After validation against semiempirical Valence Bond/Hartree−Fock results, microelectrostatic calculations on a large number of electron−hole (e-h) pairs allowed a statistical study of charge separation energetics in realistic morphologies. Results show that charge separation is an energetically favorable process for about 50% of interfacial e-h pairs, which provides a rationale for the high internal quantum efficiencies reported for P3HT/PCBM heterojunctions. Three effects contribute to overcome the Coulomb attraction between electron and hole: (i) favorable electrostatic landscape across the interface, (ii) electronic polarization, and (iii) interface-induced torsional disorder in P3HT chains. Moreover, the energetic disorder due to the PCBM polar group is shown to play a key role in increasing the dissociation probability.

The electronic structure at organic/organic interfaces plays a key role, among others, in defining the quantum efficiency of organics-based photovoltaic cells. Here, we perform quantum-chemical and microelectrostatic calculations on molecular aggregates of various sizes and shapes to characterize the interfacial dipole moment at pentacene/C 60 heterojunctions. The results show that the interfacial dipole mostly originates in polarization effects due to the asymmetry in the multipolar expansion of the electronic density distribution between the interacting molecules, rather than in a charge transfer from donor to acceptor. The local dipole is found to fluctuate in sign and magnitude over the interface and appears as a sensitive probe of the relative arrangements of the pentacene and C 60 molecules (and of the resulting local electrical fields sensed by the molecular units).

Hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments and quantum chemical calculations are combined to investigate the second-order nonlinear optical responses of a series of reference molecules, namely, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroacetonitrile, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. The multipolar decomposition of the first hyperpolarizability tensor through the use of the spherical harmonics formalism is employed to highlight the impact of the symmetry of the molecular scatterers on their nonlinear optical responses. It is demonstrated that HRS is a technique of choice to probe the molecular symmetry of the compounds. Coupled-cluster calculations performed at the coupled-cluster level with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples in combination with highly extended basis sets and including environment effects by using the polarizable continuum model qualitatively reproduce the molecular first hyperpolarizabilities and depolarization ratios of the molecular scatterers.
