En las zonas agrícolas aledañas al río Carrizal (Ecuador) se cultivan diversas especies vegetales, aplicándose indiscriminadamente plaguicidas, que producen una contaminación inminente del agua. Se planteó como objetivo determinar la concentración de plaguicidas organofosforados en el río Carrizal. La detección y cuantificación de nueve plaguicidas se realizó mediante extracción en fase sólida y cromatografía de gases. Se tomaron 15 muestras de aguas superficiales en cinco puntos de áreas agrícolas en tres meses. Para indagar sobre el conocimiento y la amenaza tecnológica por el uso de plaguicidas, se aplicó una entrevista a pobladores del área. Los análisis determinaron la presencia de los plaguicidas phorate y famphur, según la localidad y mes de muestreo, pero no sobrepasaron los límites máximos permisibles de la normativa ambiental de Ecuador para agua destinada a consumo humano y uso doméstico (0,1 µg/ml); en phorate se evidenciaron límites de cuantificación y detección de 0,004 y 0,001 µg/ml, mientras que en famphur de 0,011 y 0,004 µg/ml, respectivamente. La entrevista demostró escaso conocimiento sobre la amenaza que representa el uso de estos compuestos en actividades agropecuarias, lo que amerita continuar investigaciones de esta naturaleza, tanto en el contexto ambiental como socio-cultural.
