The 2030 Agenda brings with it an important proposal for tackling social inequalities, and it does so through the proposition of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among which SDG 6 stands out by addressing aspects of the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. In Brazil, compliance with such premises has as its structuring point the New Brasilian Sanitation Legal Framework (NBSLF – Brasilian Federal Law No. 14,026) which established the general conditions for the universalization of these services, highlighting the year 2033 as the limit for such configuration. The work presented here seeks to assess the challenges of meeting these goals for the specific case of the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR), based on data made available on platforms such as the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), IBGE and even consultations with the program contracts signed between the state concessionaire and the municipalities of the RMR and based on them, the main assumptions considered here as challenges to the achievement of universalization are evaluated (governance; availability and conditions for raising the necessary resources; structuring of the sector's productive chain and impacts on the social life of the beneficiary population). The analyzes carried out point to very challenging aspects in all areas, either as a result of the contribution of a significant number of resources, or when considering the weaknesses of the production chain; but they also highlight the need to develop a broader environmental awareness on the part of the local population, in order to support the implementation of the universalization process outlined for access to basic sanitation.
