Einer der initialen Vertreter deutscher Existenzphilosophie, Karl Jaspers, geht in seinem Werk durchgängig der Frage nach, was Philosophie sei. In seiner philosophischen Autobiographie gibt er einen überraschenden Hinweis, der dem Träumen einen besonderen, nämlich konstitutiven Wert im Hinblick auf Philosophie zumißt. Dies ist unerwartet vor dem Hintergrund einer abendländischen Philosophietradition, die das Rationale in besonderer Weise differenziert und hervorgehoben hat, zu dem der Traum und das Träumen, wenn überhaupt, eher nur bedingt zählen. Und es ist weiter verwunderlich, weil auch im Rahmen einer sich mit Faktizität konfrontierenden Existenzphilosophie die herausragende Stellung des Träumens erklärungsbedürftig ist. Aber Jaspers bleibt dabei: »Was mir im Umgang mit Menschen, in Fakultätssitzungen, in den Zeitungen, auf der Straße und auf Reisen begegnete, vor allem aber in der Anschauung geliebter Menschen und ihres Geschickes aufging, das alles wurde übersetzt in Formulierungen, die den Ausgangspunkt nicht mehr erkennen ließen. Was mir bei den großen Philosophen klar wurde, das wurde in Aneignung zu gegenwärtiger Wahrheit erworben. Leise, scheinbar zufällige Veranlassungen brachten mir Einsichten. Solche Arbeit ist zwar Arbeit mit Planen und Lenken. Aber sie gelingt nur, wenn ständig etwas anderes zur Wirkung kommt: das Träumen. Oft blickte ich in die Landschaft, in den Himmel, die Wolken, oft saß oder lag ich, ohne etwas zu tun. Nur die Ruhe des Besinnens in der unbefangenen Bewegung der Phantasie läßt die Impulse zur Geltung kommen, ohne die jede Arbeit endlos, unwesentlich, leer wird. Mir scheint: Wer nicht täglich eine Weile träumt, dem verdunkelt sich der Stern, von dem alle Arbeit und jeder Alltag geführt sein kann.« 1 1 PhR über wieder philosophisches Neuland zurückzugewinnen ist. Der Traum ist darin ein ›Refl exiv‹ des Menschlichen und seiner Wirklichkeit.
