Ausgehend von der steigenden Bedeutung der Oxydationsverfahren zur Erzeugung einer großen Anzahl sehr wichtiger Grundstoffe, wird zunächst die Theorie der Oxydation in flüssiger Phase und Gasphase behandelt. Dann werden für die wesentlichsten Gruppen an Ausgangsstoffen (Paraffine, Olefine, Hydroaromaten, Aromaten) bei beiden Verfahrensweisen die einzelnen Prozesse geschildert und an je einem Beispiel die Flüssigphasenoxydation (Butan‐Oxydation zu Essigsäure) und Gasphasenoxydation (Äthylen zu Äthylenoxyd) etwas eingehender beschrieben. Im Gegensatz zur erwünschten Oxydation steht der unerwünschte Angriff des Sauerstoffs, der ebenfalls eine große technische Bedeutung hat (z. B. bei Kunststoffen und Kautschuk). Dies gibt Gelegenheit, die wesentlichen Theorien und allgemeinen Verfahren der Inhibierung und Stabilisation abschließend zu behandeln. Der Ausblick zeigt, in welche Bereiche der chemischen Industrie die durch Oxydationsverfahren erzeugten Produkte hineinführen.
