Au-delà du rôle joué par les politiques macroéconomiques au Japon (et notamment la faiblesse des taux directeurs), une baisse de la préférence des ménages japonais pour les titres domestiques (home bias) est l'une des pistes parfois avancées pour expliquer la faiblesse du yen : ceux-ci achèteraient davantage d'actifs étrangers pour rééquilibrer leurs portefeuilles, dans lesquels les actifs japonais étaient jusque là «sur-pondérés». Un examen des titres détenus par les ménages japonais ne permet cependant pas de conforter cette hypothèse. On montre ici que la faiblesse du yen jusqu'à l'été 2007 a été en partie due à des opérations spéculatives dites de « portage » sur le marché des changes (carry trades). Ces opérations, réalisées notamment par échange de produits dérivés, sont difficiles à bien identifier. Elles peuvent en outre être porteuses d'instabilité puisqu'elles sont susceptibles de bouleverser le financement de certaines économies en cas de modification des anticipations des opérateurs de marché.
