Les espaces protégés ont pour fonction de soustraire des portions d'habitats naturels et les populations animales qui les peuplent à la pression croissante des sociétés humaines. Toutefois, en l'absence de régulation des populations de grands ongulés, leurs effectifs augmentent considérablement. Ce phénomène soulève trois problèmes essentiels. Le premier concerne l'impact de ces populations surnuméraires sur les écosystèmes protégés eux-mêmes. En second lieu, l'augmentation des cheptels conduit les individus en surnombre à coloniser les espaces environnants. Cette dissémination périphérique constitue une troisième problématique relative aux coûts des déprédations et conflits qui en découlent entre gestionnaires de l 'aire protégée et sociétés locales. Nous posons l 'hypothèse que la clé pour pallier ces problèmes récurrents et conflictuels se trouve dans une redéfinition des modes de gestion de ces espaces et dans la prise en compte de l 'inscription territoriale de ces espèces outrepassant largement les périmètres protégés. Dès lors, en présence d'écosystèmes marqués par l'absence de grands prédateurs, la régulation cynégétique de ces populations s 'impose de fait. A travers l'étude de trois terrains présentant des statuts réglementaires et des contextes territoriaux différents, le Parc national des Pyrénées, la Réserve naturelle de Cousseau et la Réserve naturelle de Bruges en Gironde, nous verrons comment les gestionnaires se saisissent de ces problèmes et par quels moyens ils tentent de les solutionner. Etudier les conditions dans lesquelles se produisent ces interventions constitue donc le cœur de notre analyse.
