Résumé Au moment précis où, critiquant sa « déviation théoriciste », Althusser procède à une repolitisation de la philosophie, il écrit en 1967 qu’il ne sait finalement pas ce qu’est la politique. En 1978, dans Marx dans ses limites , il affirme encore que jamais les classiques du marxisme « ne nous ont donné... le commencement d’une analyse répondant à la question : qu’est-ce que peut bien être la politique ? ». Cet article cherche à reconstruire la positivité de ces remarques désabusées d’Althusser, à partir d’une ébauche consacrée en 1961 à la « conception marxiste de la politique ». En se posant la question de ce que pourra bien être la politique dans un régime communiste, Althusser, au moment où il entre dans sa « maturité », en arrive à saper toutes les conceptions marxistes de la politique, et d’abord celle de la lutte de classes pour le pouvoir d’État — et même de la lutte de classes tout court. Bien plus, il fait subir comme un vacillement à l’althussérisme au moment précis où il commence à l’élaborer. En évoquant « toute une zone qui n’est pas située dans les concepts théoriques, et qui justement sera la zone libérée par la fin du politique conçu classiquement », Althusser nous montre magistralement que la politique ne peut avoir lieu qu’à la condition exprès de n’être située en aucun lieu prédéterminé. Insituabilité de la politique qui acquiert sa dimension positive lorsqu’elle est travaillée par l’analyse althussérienne de l’ « étrange vacillement de la théorie » effectué dans l’œuvre de Machiavel.
