Ce livre, qui se présente comme une réflexion sur « l'accompagnement spirituel dans la diversité des traditions » (5), se déploie sous la forme d'un entretien entre Nicolas Charrette, écrivain et professeur de français langue seconde, et George Bastien, intervenant en soins spirituels au Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sainte-Justine (CHUSJ). Ledit livre est divisé en quatre parties. Dans la première, les auteurs s'intéressent à l'histoire de la profession d'accompagnateur spirituel au sein des institutions hospitalières québécoises. Dans la deuxième partie, ils explorent plusieurs définitions de la spiritualité et du besoin spirituel, de même que les différences entre spiritualité et religion. Ensuite, ils discutent de l'intervention en soins spirituels en tant que telle, à savoir la relation que l'intervenant en soins spirituels est appelé à tisser avec les personnes aux prises avec « la maladie, la leur ou celle d'un proche » (6). Enfin, dans la quatrième et dernière partie, ils abordent la question de l'accompagnement spirituel auprès des communautés culturelles et religieuses. D'entrée de jeu, on doit reconnaître que la plus grande force de ce livre réside dans sa forme dialogale. Fort d'un langage familier et accessible, les enjeux et les thèmes y sont abordés dans une alternance entre questions et réponses, ce qui donne au lecteur l'impression, agréable par ailleurs, d'assister à une conversation entre deux personnes. À ce titre, le livre remplit très certainement une de ses fonctions, à savoir informer un « public général » au sujet des réalités du métier d'intervenant en soins spirituels. Ceci étant dit, cette formule plus familière et moins en phase avec les codes de la prose universitaire pourrait déplaire aux autres publics visés par ce livre, comme par exemple les soignants, et surtout les décideurs. Plusieurs raisons motivent une telle remarque, mais nous nous en tiendrons à deux exemples qui illustrent bien le genre de critiques que l'on serait tenté d'adresser à ce livre.Notre première critique concerne le recours systématique à des anecdotes. Ainsi, plutôt que de nous expliquer ce que les théoriciens et cliniciens du domaine des soins spirituels ont à dire sur la spiritualité, la mort, les besoins spirituels et autres sujets, Bastien nous parle essentiellement de son expérience : aussi pertinentes soient-elles, les impressions et opinions qu'il nous livre ne peuvent que survoler de façon expéditive des
