Nous nous intéressons à la reconstitution de l’histoire géologique d’un géo-site par un médiateur scientifique qui intervient « sur le terrain ». Une telle médiation suppose d’articuler la topographie de l’excursion avec le parcours narratif mis en place par le médiateur. Nous montrons que la mise en récit pré-figure les événements géologiques en mettant en place un cadre d’« intelligibilité » de la topographie des lieux et prépare ainsi la configuration des événements géologiques. La mise en récit engage également cette topographie dans des formes de rétrodiction qui organisent les liens de nécessité entre les événements géologiques, indispensables à une reconstitution historique rationnelle.
Nous souhaitons montrer dans cet article comment les analepses (procédés narratifs selon lesquels on remonte le temps) sont mises en oeuvre par un médiateur-géologue « sur le terrain », face à un public non spécialiste. Nous nous intéressons pour cela au discours de l'un d'entre eux et plus particulièrement aux mises en récit qu'il convoque. Nous cherchons à repérer si celles-ci sont susceptibles d'engager un mode de problématisation propre à la géologie de terrain : la problématisation historique. À partir d'enregistrements, nous étudions comment le médiateur met en oeuvre le récit et plus précisément comment il articule les analepses avec les problèmes historiques. Nos résultats montrent que le recours à l'analepse est souvent implicite et peu questionné. Les analepses assurent, grâce à des formes de « rétrodiction », l'exploration du passé dans sa dimension spatio-temporelle. Nous montrons que ces retours en arrière favorisent un voyage le long d'un récit « déjà-écrit » et non pas en élaboration. Notre étude met en outre en évidence les difficultés du médiateur à entrer dans une véritable recherche des conditions de possibilité des événements, lesquelles permettent de faire ressortir en quoi l'histoire géologique est contingente.
