Regards sur l'« impouvoir » : le « cinéma direct » de Ruspoli, de la terre à l'asile par François Bovier Mario Ruspoli est l'un des pionniers du « cinéma direct », qui repose sur la mobilisation d'un matériel audio-visuel synchrone et léger. En 1961, il réalise, avec une caméra 16mm Coutant-Mathot (le prototype KMT 1) et un enregistreur Nagra, Les inconnus de la terre et Regard sur la folie-moyens métrages sur lesquels portera ma lecture. Partisan d'une approche anthropologique, Ruspoli documente la vie d'hommes et de femmes qui sont isolés, en raison de leur situation géographique (des paysans dans la Lozère) ou de leur mise à ban de la société (les patients de l'hôpital psychiatrique de Saint-Alban, dans la Lozère également). Ces ilms, tournés avec la même équipe (les opérateurs Michel Brault et Roger Morillère, la preneuse de son Danielle Tessier), participent aux enjeux liés à la pratique du « cinéma direct ». Par ailleurs, Ruspoli prendra lui-même position vis-à-vis des polémiques et des débats qui se cristalliseront en mars 1963 lors des Journées d'étude du MIPE-TV autour des techniques légères (voir la contribution de Séverine Graff au présent dossier), en rédigeant un rapport pour l'UNESCO 2 , où il joue explicitement le « Cinéma Direct » contre le « Cinéma-Vérité » de Jean Rouch et Edgar Morin. Je situerai donc brièvement Les inconnus de la terre et Regard sur la folie par rapport à d'autres productions d'équipes légères de tournage, qui constituent pour Ruspoli autant de référents dont s'inspirer ou d'antécédents à dépasser. Mais mon hypothèse de lecture repose sur un autre parallélisme qui est mobilisé par les psychiatres de Saint-Alban à l'occasion du tournage de Regard sur la folie : en l'occurrence, « l'impouvoir » dont fait état Antonin Artaud, qui disloque sa pensée et désagrège son écriture. Car, de mon point de vue, le groupe synchrone léger supervisé par Ruspoli, dans Les inconnus de la terre et Regard sur la folie, peut être envisagé comme un sismographe qui enregistre les dérèglements de la pensée et les dificultés de corps en souffrance, confrontés à la rigueur de la terre ou aux murs de l'asile. Il convient tout d'abord d'expliciter la nature de cet interprétant.
Le cinéma militant est le plus souvent marqué au sceau de l'internationalisme, le cinéaste intervenant au sein de luttes armées pour l'indépendance ou s'engageant dans des conlits sociaux ancrés dans des situations géopolitiques déterminées. C'est exemplairement le cas de Joris Ivens, que René Vautier considère comme un modèle et un point de repère : le cinéaste prend activement part aux luttes d'indépendance et aux mouvements de grève, en s'impliquant concrètement sur le terrain. Ivens peut ainsi exalter la lutte des Républicains et dénoncer les exactions des franquistes dans Terre d'Espagne (1937), ilmer la grève des dockers et des marins indonésiens s'insurgeant contre la colonisation dans Indonesia Calling (1946), ou encore le processus de décolonisation des Maliens dans Demain à Nanguila (1960) 1. Quant à René Vautier, il stigmatise la situation coloniale en Afrique-Occidentale française dans Afrique 50 (1950) et l'apartheid en Afrique du Sud dans Frontline (réalisé avec Oliver Tambo, 1976), ou encore tourne auprès des militants indépendantistes pendant la guerre d' Algérie (notamment Une nation, l'Algérie, 1954, Algérie en flammes, 1957-1958, et Un peuple en marche, 1963) tout en formant les opérateurs du Centre audiovisuel d' Alger, qu'il dirige de 1962 à 1965 2. Il s'agit là de ilms « insérés » dans une lutte 3 , ou de « cinéma d'intervention sociale » pour reprendre l'expression revendiquée par René Vautier 4.
