El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar los procesos de localización de franjas de pobreza que tienen lugar en Bacalar, Quintana Roo. Primero se propone una aproximación conceptual a las franjas de pobreza y se discuten teóricamente las implicaciones del turismo en el crecimiento y desarrollo económico de una región. Para dar cometido al objetivo se planteó una metodología de gabinete en dos fases, primero se revisaron los indicadores de pobreza y mapas de pobreza que el Consejo Nacional de Evaluación de la Política de Desarrollo Social (CONEVAL) genera con un nivel de desagregación a nivel Área Geoestadística Básica (AGEB). Con esos datos se crearon buffers en ArcMap para medir el grado de influencia que tiene la Laguna de Bacalar respecto a la actividad turística y la segregación espacial socioeconómica, lo que permitió delimitar las franjas de pobreza, que se identificaron en Bacalar, siendo la propia Laguna, la Avenida 9 y la Carretera federal los límites y áreas de influencia de las franjas de pobreza. Se concluye que en el caso de Bacalar el turismo ha traído consigo indudables elementos para hablar de crecimiento económico, sin embargo, la desigualdad identificada, así como las franjas de pobreza, permiten cuestionar si realmente la actividad turística ha generado desarrollo en Bacalar.
