En Himalaya, où nombre de cérémonies religieuses associent la musique et la danse, les publications qui prennent en compte l'aspect performatif des rituels restent encore extrêmement limitées, la majorité des recherches ayant été réalisées dans des perspectives ethnologique, sociologique ou linguistique. Parmi les nombreuses cérémonies de type oraculaire de l'Himalaya occidental, le jâgar kumaoni dont il sera ici question, apparaît comme l'une des plus achevées sur le plan des interactions entre structures narratives, musicales et chorégraphiques. Loin d'occuper de simples fonctions ornementales, la musique et la danse s'y affirment comme coconstitutives de la structure rituelle. Prenant appui sur la description d'une séance type, on isolera la pluralité des gestes exprimés par les différents intervenants. On s'attachera à décrypter les techniques et les représentations symboliques auxquelles ils sont associés. Replaçant enfin cette lecture musicologique dans une perspective globale, on réfléchira au rôle joué par les procédés techniques et les stratégies musicales dans l'organisation spatio-temporelle du rituel '.
RepèresLes Kumaoni regroupent sous le vocable Ae jâgar un ensemble de cérémonies qui peuvent être divisées en deux grandes classes: les cultes domestiques (gharau-ka jâgar) et les cérémonies de temples (dhuni-ka jâgar)1. La description et les analyses proposées se fondent plus particulièrement sur deux séances de jâgar enregistrées et filmées à Almora (Kumaon, Uttaranchal, Inde du Nord) en mars 1999. La première dans la maison même du médium, une femme de caste Tamâta (chaudronniers), la seconde dans la maison d'un brahmane, les deux séances ayant été effectuées par les mêmes interprètes.
