Epigenetics of polycystic ovary syndromeE l síndrome de ovario poliquístico (SOP), es una disfunción endocrino-metabólica con una prevalencia de 6-10% en mujeres de edad reproductiva 1,2 . Se caracteriza por hiperandrogenismo, oligo-anovulación y morfología de ovario poliquística. Representa la causa más frecuente de infertilidad anovulatoria e hiperandrogenismo en mujeres. Además, la mayoría de las pacientes con SOP desarrollan resistencia insulínica periférica (RI) y poseen un mayor riesgo de desarrollar diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) 3 .Su etiología es multifactorial, y es tema de investigación relevante ya que el SOP se considera un desorden genético complejo, en donde numerosos genes contribuyen parcialmente al fenotipo sin que alguno de ellos constituya uno de riesgo mayor. El fenotipo es también influenciado por factores ambientales 4,5 , siendo finalmente la suma de ambos factores, la que gatilla el síndrome [6][7][8] . A esto debemos sumar la acción del ambiente, siendo finalmente la suma de ambos factores, los gatilladores del síndrome 7,8 . Se ha sugerido que existen factores genéticos implicados en el desarrollo del síndrome, debido a que se ha observado un fuerte componente de agregación familiar, siendo afectados entre 20-40% de los parientes de primer grado de las mujeres con SOP 9-12 . En los últimos años se ha propuesto que la programación fetal podría estar implicada en la patogenia del SOP. En este contexto la exposición prenatal a andrógenos (EPA) podría ser uno de los principales candidatos como factor reprogramador [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] . Este barrido mucociliar elimina el moco en un proceso que exige una regulación muy fina entre el volumen y composición del moco y el volumen de líquido periciliar, de tal forma que permitan un adecuado batido ciliar 5,6 . Numerosos factores pueden alterar este balance al inducir sobreproducción e hipersecreción de moco o activar respuestas como la producción de sustancias antivirales, antibióticas y citoquinas proinflamatorias 7 .
