En este trabajo analizo la proliferación de memes en la cultura digital de la Universidad Nacional de Educación (UNAE, una universidad pública de Ecuador). Desde referentes de los Nuevos Estudios de Literacidad y las Nuevas Literacidades, realicé un acercamiento etnográfico a estas prácticas discursivas que implican la escritura en relación con otros medios para la producción de significado. Identifiqué la página de Facebook más exitosa que difunde memes en relación con la UNAE y recogí todos los memes del mes de octubre de 2019 (64 en total). Los categoricé inductivamente y encontré tres ejes generales para su descripción e interpretación: los temas tratados, los referentes o conocimientos que ponen en juego y las funciones implícitas además del humor. Describí en profundidad los 10 memes más exitosos (en términos de la interacción que detonaron) y brindé un panorama de los temas tratados (vivencias en la universidad, promoción de un modelo de estudiante y el paro nacional) y de sus funciones implícitas (informar, aliviar emociones, vincular a la comunidad, debatir política y reclutar miembros para la protesta). Finalmente, argumento que los memes cumplen funciones sociales importantes y podrían considerarse como un apoyo a la participación de los estudiantes universitarios en la cultura escrita y la sociedad.
