Este artículo expone, a partir de una revisión de archivos regionales, el tránsito de la utilización de semillas criollas a las semillas certificadas de maíz en Antioquia durante el periodo 1920-1980. En este departamento, la tecnificación agrícola estuvo en manos de instituciones oficiales y misiones extranjeras que definieron “modernizar” el campo colombiano con la implementación de la investigación y experimentación agronómica. En este proceso, la renovación de las técnicas de cultivos, en especial el mejoramiento de las semillas de maíz para una mayor producción, ocuparon un espacio significativo. El análisis de documentos provenientes del mundo de la agronomía, combinado con información de fuentes históricas, muestra el desfase entre la experimentación agronómica y la producción de este cereal, alimento insigne de la cultura alimentaria de esta sociedad. El texto muestra los esfuerzos y avances del conocimiento agronómico, pero al mismo tiempo expone su escasa incidencia en el desarrollo rural antioqueño.
El artículo expone las características de una cultura maicera como la antioqueña en la primera mitad del siglo XX, en la que destaca su limitada producción para atender la creciente demanda de maíz. Esto obligó para su aprovisionamiento en Medellín, centro de la región, a una ampliación de redes de comercio con el resto del departamento y el país. El estudio evidencia la ausencia de una modernización regional en esta actividad tanto en producción como industrialización, y una nula especialización de la estructura rural para proveer de este cereal altamente valorado para la nutrición de la clase trabajadora.
El subtítulo de Adiós, historia, adiós señala la tesis que orienta toda la obra: "el abandono del pasado en el mundo actual". Manuel Cruz parte de la convicción generalizada que la historia ya no ilumina el presente y que ha dejado de funcionar como fuente de recursos para entender el tiempo actual y orientar el futuro. Esta convicción, basada en la tesis hegemónica de Francis Fukuyama, es revisada y cuestionada a lo largo del libro. Cruz plantea que la historia no ha terminado, sino que nosotros nos hemos encargado de abandonarla. Un abandono propio del mundo actual en el cual el presente o el "presentismo" parecieran ser nuestro único horizonte. Escrito de manera compleja y densa, al mejor estilo de la filosofía de la historia, este libro retoma el debate sobre el fin de la historia y proporciona elementos para examinar el carácter repetible o irrepetible, continuo o discontinuo de la historia y de los acontecimientos humanos. Manuel Cruz aborda una variedad de temas, problemas y debates alrededor de la historia en relación con las dimensiones del tiempo: pasado, presente y futuro.El discurso sobre la despedida de la historia comienza con la pregunta ¿qué hacemos cuando recordamos? A modo de hipótesis, Cruz responde: "lo que hacemos es fundar el pasado" (p. 13). El autor se vale de un lenguaje metafórico para dar fuerza a su argumentación, como al acuñar la expresión "fronteras del tiempo" para entender el devenir de los acontecimientos humanos y las fracturas que se van produciendo en la historia. Las "fronteras del tiempo" deben ser entendidas, entre otras cosas, como las grandes revoluciones, las fundaciones de los Estados, el surgimiento de imperios, las guerras y todo lo que la humanidad va dibujando con su propio obrar. Por tal razón, condena al fracaso las pretensiones cientificistas que anticipan conductas y predicen el futuro, puesto que no tienen en cuenta la capacidad humana para interrumpir los procesos y para inaugurar nuevas temporalidades. * Estudiante de la Maestría en Historia en la Universidad de Antioquia.
