A descriptive analysis of 416 documents was performed using bibliometric techniques, in order to gather existing knowledge in circular economy focusing on waste management (2007–2020). The results of this study indicate that annual scientific production increased 94% in the last 5 years, highlighting the countries of Italy, Spain, the UK, China, Brazil, and India. Between the most cited documents stand out those related to calorific value of municipal solid waste and waste to energy technologies for achieving circular economy systems. The conceptual analysis indicates strong linkage between circular economy and sustainable production, waste management, and recycling. Emerging research trends evolved from processes and industry-oriented approach (2017) toward waste management, recycling, and circular economy (2019) and sustainable development and urban solid waste (2020). The analysis reveals five dominant circular economy and waste research themes: (1) greenhouse gases; (2) circular economy, waste management, and recycling; (3) life cycle; (4) waste treatment; and (5) anaerobic digestion and recovery; trends research are related to policy interventions, and enforcement of authorities’ regulations to foster circular economy transition, increase the use of practices of recycling and reusing, as well as discourage a growing consumption culture. Results found denote the challenge represented by the implementation of comprehensive policies in circular economy. The above being a key alternative for green recovery in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The application of artificial neural networks on adsorption modeling has significantly increased during the last decades. These artificial intelligence models have been utilized to correlate and predict kinetics, isotherms, and breakthrough curves of a wide spectrum of adsorbents and adsorbates in the context of water purification. Artificial neural networks allow to overcome some drawbacks of traditional adsorption models especially in terms of providing better predictions at different operating conditions. However, these surrogate models have been applied mainly in adsorption systems with only one pollutant thus indicating the importance of extending their application for the prediction and simulation of adsorption systems with several adsorbates (i.e., multicomponent adsorption). This review analyzes and describes the data modeling of adsorption of organic and inorganic pollutants from water with artificial neural networks. The main developments and contributions on this topic have been discussed considering the results of a detailed search and interpretation of more than 250 papers published on Web of Science ® database. Therefore, a general overview of the training methods, input and output data, and numerical performance of artificial neural networks and related models utilized for adsorption data simulation is provided in this document. Some remarks for the reliable application and implementation of artificial neural networks on the adsorption modeling are also discussed. Overall, the studies on adsorption modeling with artificial neural networks have focused mainly on the analysis of batch processes (87%) in comparison to dynamic systems (13%) like packed bed columns. Multicomponent adsorption has not been extensively analyzed with artificial neural network models where this literature review indicated that 87% of references published on this topic covered adsorption systems with only one adsorbate. Results reported in several studies indicated that this artificial intelligence tool has a significant potential to develop reliable models for multicomponent adsorption systems where antagonistic, synergistic, and noninteraction adsorption behaviors can occur simultaneously. The development of reliable artificial neural networks for the modeling of multicomponent adsorption in batch and dynamic systems is fundamental to improve the process engineering in water treatment and purification.
The use of artificial intelligence techniques in the design of processes has generated a line of research of interest, in areas of chemical engineering and especially in the so-called separation processes, in this chapter the combination of artificial neural networks (ANN) is presented and fuzzy dynamic artificial neural networks (DFANN). Applied to the calculation of thermodynamic properties and the design of reactive distillation columns, the ANN and DFANN are mathematical models that resemble the behavior of the human brain, the proposed models do not require linearization of thermodynamic equations, models of mass and energy transfer, this provides an approximate and tight solution compared to robust reactive distillation column design models. Generally, the models must be trained according to a dimensionless model, for the design of a reactive column a dimensionless model is not required, it is observed that the use of robust models for the design and calculation of thermodynamic properties give results that provide better results than those calculated with a commercial simulator such as Aspen Plus (R), it is worth mentioning that in this chapter only the application of neural network models is shown, not all the simulation and implementation are presented, mainly because it is a specialized area where not only requires a chapter for its explanation, it is shown that with a neural network of 16 inputs, 2 hidden layers and 16 outputs, it generates a robust calculation system compared to robust thermodynamic models that contain the same commercial simulator, a characteristic of the network presented is the minimization of overlearning in which the network by its very nature is low. In addition, it is shown that it is a dynamic model that presents adjustment as a function of time with an approximation of 96–98% of adjustment for commercial simulator models such as Aspen Plus (R), the DFANN is a viable alternative for implementation in processes of separation, but one of the disadvantages of the implementation of these techniques is the experience of the programmer both in the area of artificial intelligence and in separation processes.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
