Abstract:The suitable climate habitat modeling for the potential distribution of species is a powerful tool to project the impacts of climate change and to suggest management measures that may mitigate its negative effects. The objectives of this study were: (1) To determine the potential distribution of Swietenia macrophylla primarily for the Yucatan Peninsula, México and for Guatemala, Belize and eastern Honduras, and (2) to suggest management actions for recoupling the contemporary populations to their suitable climate habitat by the decade centered in the year 2030. Geographical records for S. macrophylla were obtained from the Mexican National Forest and Soil Inventory and the grids for contemporary (average 1961-1990) and future (decade centered on 2030), with intermediate greenhouse-effect gas concentration scenarios (6.0 W/m 2 ). Potential distribution under the contemporary and future climate was modeled using MaxEnt. For the decade of 2030 it is projected a climatic habitat loss of 60 % in relation to contemporary distribution at the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, and eastern Honduras. Suitable climate habitat practically disappears in Quintana Roo, moving to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. It is proposed to collect seed in the current distribution in Quintana Roo and planting inside the Reserve, with the purpose of conducting ex situ conservation...
ABSTRACTMexican sawn wood is facing a lack of competitiveness with respect to imported wood. Over the period 1993-1995 average national production was able to supply 80% of the national consumption whereas by the period 2001-2003 only was capable of supplying 24%. In order to determine the factors that could revert this tendency, a non linear programming model was used. Results indicate that if there were subsidies a 30% reduction in production costs would decrease imported wood in about 1,1%, which means 50,139 m 3 of sawn wood, and it would increase the national production in 2,1%. A 20% reduction in transportation cost would lead to a rise in the national sawn wood production of 3,8%, this is 90 500 m 3 in terms of sawn wood; consequently, imported sawn wood would decrease in 2,2%, which means 102 034 m 3 of sawn wood. If a 6% tariff above the international price were to be implemented, the national production would increase in about 5,6%, this means 132 355 m 3 of sawn wood. This tariff will help to decrease imported wood in about 9,5%, this is 306 923 m 3 of sawn wood with respect to those of the 2001-2003 period.
Biometric systems are the basis of forest management and consist of a set of equations that describe the relationships between forest attributes and dendrometric variables. A systematic review of the state of the art of biometric systems in Mexico was carried out by a Mexican consortium (10 researchers), covering a period of 50 years ca (1970–2019), using the main scientific literature delivered by a systematic search (WoS, Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc) and a targeted search (theses, technical reports, etc.). A single selection criterion was established for the inclusion of information in the analysis: the document had to present at least one of the equations of interest. We found 376 documents containing 2524 equations for volume (69%), diameter (11%), height (9%) and site index (11%). These equations were developed for forest species mainly from temperate regions (88%), such as pine (66%) and oak (9%). Consequently, the Mexican states with the highest number of equations were Durango (28%), Chihuahua (17%), Hidalgo (13%) and Oaxaca (8%). Although large, the number of equations identified concentrated on a relatively small number of models: Schumacher & Hall and Fang et al. for volume; Chapman-Richards and Schumacher for site index and diameter; and Chapman-Richards and the allometric equation for height. An analysis of model fit, measured through R2, showed that, on average, the volume, diameter and site index models show high fit (R2 = 0.96), although this pattern was more consistent in the volume models. Publication bias was evaluated by means of a funnel plot analysis, with no apparent bias identified. A limitation of our study is that the information obtained is not updated to the present year; however, the 50-year trends allow us to assume that no recent significant changes in the patterns exist. Finally, we highlight the need to assess the predictive ability of the models to ensure accurate estimates to support better forest management decisions.
