The behavior of cyanobacteria and its potential use for biofuel production in scale-up conditions is a topic of growing importance. The aim of our work is to study the effects of illumination, stirring, and different growth phases on the cultivation of the cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis in 10 L raceways. The cultivations were carried out in a greenhouse under measured, but not controlled, illumination and in agitated raceways with stirring speeds varying from 0.1 to 0.4 m s, using culture media with nutrient depletion. At the end of the stationary phase (SP) and decline of culture, the biomass was harvested and used to determine the chemical composition. The stirring rate and the growing phase influenced the carbohydrate concentration. In both phases of cultivation, compared to high-speed stirring, stirring at lower speeds produced fewer carbohydrates in the culture. Biomass grown until the end of the SP with a stirring speed of 0.35 m s had a carbohydrate content of 72%, which is very high compared to that reported in the literature.
ABSTRACTThe increase in the environment contamination has led the scientific community to look for ways to repair such disturbances cheaply, viable and less intrusive as possible. Composting is a biotechnological alternative widely used for the treatment of organic solid waste that can also be successfully used in the bioremediation of contaminated with toxic organic compounds. The objective was to present the main parameters involved in the composting process, and report the use of compost as bioremediation technology. When the physical, chemical and biological parameters is well controlled, composting can be considered a low cost technology, appropriate for the treatment of soils containing toxic organic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, explosives.
The search for biofuels has been driven in recent decades due to concern over the depletion of nonrenewable energetic sources. This literature review provides an approach to the application of microorganisms for the production of bioethanol, with emphasis on microalgae. The high efficiency of photosynthetic conversion, rapid growth, the possibility of manipulation of the medium to produce biomass with high fat and carbohydrates, and the use of areas with low agricultural potential of microalgae are one of the most promising raw materials for the production of biofuels. The existence of a large variety of methods for obtaining microalgal and subsequent production of bioethanol, biomass stimulated numerous studies to increase the production potential and improve the process. Studies show that for the production of bioethanol achieve economic viability, production of algal biomass should also aim at obtaining other compounds with higher added value, such as pigments, proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to the concept of integrated biorefineries.

The rapid population growth of cities has caused the removal of vegetation cover raising the waterproofing and the occupation of riverine plains. As an important aspect of urban sustainable planning, the provision of green areas at various scales, should reduce pollution and contribute to the physical, social and psychological care of individuals. Planning, implementing and conserving green areas constitute a good of great value, making it essential for the composition of cities. This research aims to identify, quantify, classify the land use and permanent preservation areas (APPs) inserted in the urban perimeter of Passo Fundo through geoprocessing techniques, seeking to understand the reality of these area s. It was developed with the ArcGIS software, creating and manipulating georeferenced spatial data from municipal database and QuickBird satellite. The survey used a supervised classification tool to generate four classes of land use, together with the analysis of APPs, calculating the total area of these APPs and the area of each class of land use. Demonstrating that the municipality is splitted in about 56% of green areas against 44% of gray/constructed areas. Most of APPs presents arboreal occupation, representing 3% of the urban area and about 39% have an anthropical occupation by buildings, street layout and fields. With the analysis of the images was possible to identify, quantify, classify land use and APPs, generating data for the municipal administration develop public policies that aim sustainability, preservation, conservation and recovery of these areas of APPs, as well subsidies the realization of an urban and environmental planning.
