The objective of this article was to identify and discuss challenges of a beginning teacher who teaches mathematics in the early years of Elementary School at the School of Application of the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR). A case study was developed, thus allowing the use of different data sources and triangulation for analysis. Data from the teacher's oral narrative are presented here. The discussions held indicated that the teacher presented characteristics of her early career and also of experienced teachers, revealing that these moments do not have well-defined borders and limits. Regarding survival, the teacher showed insecurity for being the subject of the research, difficulties in relation to teaching mathematics, dealing with students with disabilities and with unexpected situations. In addition, the reflections also highlighted aspects of the discovery such as seeking continuing education, satisfaction in being able to develop planned activities, using games and asking questions about the assessment.
