Memórias secretas da Princesa do Brasil: as quatro coroas de Carlota Joaquina. são Paulo: Phoebus, 2008. as comemorações do bicentenário da chegada da família real portuguesa ao Brasil ensejaram uma série de eventos que, por mais que se discuta sua pertinência, não se pode negar que assinalaram aquele momento como um marco na produção historiográfica sobre o período joanino. além de novas edições -algumas delas, best-sellers -, 2008 trouxe uma série de novas reedições de obras que estavam fora de acesso ao leitor por muito tempo.este é o caso do livro publicado pela editora Phoebus (2008), Memórias secretas da princesa do Brasil, de José Presas. O livro teve a primeira publicação na cidade de Bordéus, em 1830, e uma segunda edição em Montevidéu em 1858. No Brasil, a primeira edição, traduzida e prefaciada por raimundo Magalhães Jr., é lançada no rio de Janeiro em 1940 e a segunda, em 1966, pela ediouro. Contudo, é muito raro encontrar a obra nas livrarias, bibliotecas, ou mesmo em sebos.Neste sentido, esta nova edição do livro de José Presas é duplamente bem-vinda, uma vez que em 2010 será comemorado o bicentenário da Independência da argentina e o autor foi um dos protagonistas dessa história.José Presas, espanhol criado no vice-reino do rio da Prata e bacharel em Direito pela Universidade de Charcas, provavelmente nunca teria passado à história se não tivesse sido secretário particular de Carlota Joaquina, mulher de D. João. Historicamente ele tem reputação polêmica: é por muitos considerado aventureiro, ambicioso, intrigante etc. entretanto, ele foi, também, um intelectual típico desse momento convulsionado pela decadência da metrópole e influenciado pelo liberalismo/constitucionalismo crescente no mundo colonial. É importante ressaltar que Charcas era uma província com intensa atividade intelectual e agitação política, em virtude da presença de grande contingente indígena que, desde meados do sé-culo XVIII, sobressaltava, com frequentes sublevações, as elites coloniais do rio da Prata. Por outro lado, a Universidade de Charcas foi um dos lugares de germinação das ideias liberais na américa colonial espanhola. Presas, portanto, vivenciou as contradições próprias de seu tempo.Como advogado em Buenos aires, transitou entre a intelectualidade rio-platense e, por isso, não hesitou em participar do grupo de criollos que apoiava a invasão inglesa ao vice-reino do rio da Prata (1806 e 1807). Mais audacioso foi seu plano de resgatar o general inglês Beresford, que comandou a invasão e que fora preso pelas autoridades vice-reinais. Como fugitivos, ambos vieram para o rio de Janeiro e se juntaram ao grupo de exilados portenhos que se encontrava na cidade.Com a chegada da corte de Bragança ao rio de Janeiro, Presas entra em contato com o almirante sidney smith, comandante da esquadra britânica que acompanhou D. João em sua viagem ao Brasil. a invasão francesa à espanha e a prisão dos monarcas e de toda família real espanhola por Napoleão Bonaparte acabaram por favorecer o advogado exilado que é indicado...
