O hormônio esteróide calcitriol é popularmente conhecido como vitamina D e tem importante papel no corpo humano, principalmente na absorção de cálcio e no metabolismo ósseo. Além do papel na homeostase do cálcio, acredita-se que a forma ativa da vitamina D apresente efeitos imunomoduladores. Estudos têm relacionado a insuficiência de vitamina D a várias doenças autoimunes, de modo que o uso desta vitamina é considerado como tratamento farmacológico para tais condições. Desta forma, o presente estudo buscou analisar o uso da vitamina D e suas funções, enfatizando sua ação em doenças autoimunes. O estudo teve como procedimento metodológico o delineamento de uma pesquisa bibliográfica em materiais disponibilizados principalmente na base de dados Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library on Line), Pubmed e outras fontes, como livros, teses, dissertações, etc. Conclui-se haver importantes lacunas no conhecimento sobre a ação da vitamina D em relação à prevenção e ao tratamento das doenças autoimunes, que demandam ensaios clínicos para uma melhor compreensão da influência dessa vitamina na fisiopatologia das doenças autoimunes. Acredita-se ser de suma importância a elaboração de ações de educação alimentar e nutricional, com a finalidade de informar e alertar a população sobre riscos e benefícios trazidos pela vitamina D, e da sua incorporação na prática do dia a dia.
