a b s t r a c tThis paper reviews key issues in the physical and numerical modelling of marine renewable energy systems, including wave energy devices, current turbines, and offshore wind turbines. The paper starts with an overview of the types of devices considered, and introduces some key studies in marine renewable energy modelling research. The development of new International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) guidelines for model testing these devices is placed in the context of guidelines developed or under development by other international bodies as well as via research projects. Some particular challenges are introduced in the experimental and numerical modelling and testing of these devices, including the simulation of Power-Take-Off systems (PTOs) for physical models of all devices, approaches for numerical modelling of devices, and the correct modelling of wind load on offshore wind turbines. Finally, issues related to the uncertainty in performance prediction from model test results are discussed.

An experimental and theoretical investigation on a cavitating propeller in uniform inflow is presented. Flow field investigations by advanced imaging techniques are used to extract quantitative information on the cavity extension. A refined map of the propeller cavitating behavior is established. Measurements are compared to numerical results obtained using an inviscid flow boundary element method for the analysis of blade partial sheet cavitation and supercavitation. The effect of the trailing wake vorticity on the prediction of the cavitation pattern is analyzed via a wake alignment technique.

This Round Robin Test program aims to establish the influence of the combined wave and current effect on the power capture and performance of a generic tidal turbine prototype. Three facilities offering similar range of experimental conditions have been selected on the basis that their dimensions along with the rotor diameter of the turbine translate into low blockage ratio conditions. The performance of the turbine shows differences between the facilities up to 25% in terms of average power coefficient, depending on the wave and current cases. To prevent the flow velocity increasing these differences, the turbine performance coefficients have been systematically normalized using a time-average disc-integrated velocity, accounting for vertical gradients over the turbine swept area. Differences linked to blockage effects and turbulence characteristics between facilities are both responsible for 5 to 10% of the power coefficient gaps. The intrinsic differences between the tanks play a significant role as well. A first attempt is given to show how the wave-current interaction effects can be responsible for differences in the turbine performance. In these tanks, the simultaneous generation of wave and current is a key part often producing disruptions in both of these flow characteristics.
