Dental implants have become a standard treatment in the replacement of missing teeth. If maintaining good oral health in a mouth without prosthetic elements requires proper self oral hygiene and professional maintenance, preserving implant health requires even more accuracy and consistency. Dental hygienists are fundamental in the management of the bacterial biofilm, in the context of prevention, education and professional treatment of the patient. This review explores the importance and the role of the dental hygienist in oral implantology.
The Coronavirus-19 pandemic has led to severe collapses in international health systems that have repercussions at all levels of disease prevention. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common head / neck malignancy, and it is usually diagnosed late due to patients neglecting symptoms. The purpose of this systematic review is to verify the impact of Sars-Cov-2 pandemic on OSCC diagnosis. The search methodology follows the PRISMA statement performing a PubMed investigation from 2019 to 2021 using MeSH such as “Covid-19; oral cancer”. A multidisciplinary approach would be effective, with a broadening of the knowledge of health professionals to identify cancerous lesions. A timely diagnosis of OSCC is crucial and its management is fundamental also for dental specialists. With the aim to anticipate the diagnosis, it will be desirable to set prevention campaigns also by the assistance in telemedicine.
Diabetes may cause an increase blood levels of cytokines inducing a rising of C reactive protein (PCR) and fibrinogen stimulating a subclinical inflammation which lead to adhesive molecules expression and to endothelial disfunction. A comprehensive panel of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) interleukins polymorphisms is not provided yet. As chronic periodontitis (CP) is considered the sixth complication of DM, a clarification is needed about the inflammatory role managed by single nucleotides polymorphisms (SNPs). The goal of this review is to focus on the significant diversity of SNPs in T1DM patients with and without CP. After a digital search on PubMed and Scopus with reference to the last 5 years, 21 items were enrolled. Several ILs were analyzed. T1DM still needs to be thoroughly explored regarding the ILs polymorphisms panel, however the last 5 years have led to the increased independence of this condition, causing autonomous inflammatory effects which requires further investigations. CP and T1DM association in children and adolescents represents a severe gap in literature that should be filled, the scarce presence of studies also about adults serves as a motivation for ulterior clinical researches
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition well defined in the last 15 years. Its management increasingly involves different clinicians such as gastroenterologists and dentists, because of dental erosions attributable to extraesophageal symptoms. This review provides a summary of the oral consequences of GERD, despite the fact that dental erosion can occur every time an acid attacks enamel surfaces, even more so the right diagnosis is crucial and the cooperation between clinicians is advisable.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
