Cette contribution propose une analyse ponctuelle du concept de peuple et de nation telle qu’elle est élaborée à un moment clé de l’histoire du XXe siècle par l’un des intellectuels les plus emblématiques et controversés de l’histoire culturelle de l’Italie moderne. Cesare Pavese était un écrivain de gauche qu’une abondante littérature critique a longtemps exalté comme l’un des militants culturels antifascistes les plus engagés pendant et après la chute du régime mussolinien. Cette image a été pourtant écornée par la publication posthume d’un carnet secret recueillant de nombreuses pensées de philosophie politique dont le caractère ouvertement philofasciste a soulevé un débat auprès des spécialistes et d’un vaste public. Le sens et la valeur de ces méditations peuvent être parfaitement compris et expliqués à la lumière du parcours de traduction et d’appropriation de textes de Nietzsche effectué par Pavese entre 1940 et 1945.
