The rotational viscosity of liquid crystalline polysiloxanes with a mesogenic group in the side chain is determined as a function of temperature in the nematic phase. The general temperature dependence of 7! is similar to that of monomeric nematic liquid crystals. However, the values of 7) are nearly 4 orders of magnitude higher than for monomeric liquid crystals. Some of the polysiloxanes studied are partially crystalline after an annealing process. The different couplings of the alignment axes of the nematic part and the crystalline part with the sample tube lead to a complicated dynamical behavior. The rotational motion of the director (alignment axis of the nematic part) can, however, be described by the Leslie-Ericksen equations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
