En Chile, la presencia de "campamentos" o asentamientos informales es una de las expresiones más comúnmente asociadas con la informalidad urbana. Estos representan una estrategia de acceso a la vivienda que ha sido utilizada por grupos vulnerables que, por diferentes motivos, han quedado excluidos del mercado de la vivienda formal. Se toma como caso de estudio 274 hogares chilenos e inmigrantes que residen en 17 campamentos localizados en las comunas de Lampa y Maipú, en la Región Metropolitana. Se recopiló información para caracterizar socioeconómicamente a los hogares y analizar sus movimientos de migración interna y externa, como también determinar la probabilidad de acción que tienen estos hogares para buscar una solución habitacional definitiva. Se ha podido concluir que los hogares inmigrantes no llegan a vivir directamente a los campamentos, sino que demoran aproximadamente tres años. Por otra parte, la situación habitacional previa de estos hogares está marcada por distintos tipos de informalidad (siendo característico el arriendo sin contrato) y sus trayectorias residenciales son más amplias -entre comunas-, a diferencia de los hogares chilenos, que se producen al interior de la misma comuna. Finalmente, se determina que, cuando el horizonte de permanencia en el campamento es mayor, la probabilidad de búsqueda activa para una situación habitacional disminuye fuertemente.
