En 2005, la France vote deux lois qui changent radicalement les missions assignées à l’École. La première, la loi pour l’égalité des droits et des chances des personnes handicapées, reconnaît à chaque enfant présentant un handicap le droit d’être inscrit en milieu scolaire ordinaire. La seconde, la loi d’orientation et de programme pour l’avenir de l’École, engage les enseignants à garantir à tous les élèves la maîtrise des compétences définies par le socle commun dans lequel la priorité est donnée à « la maîtrise de la langue » et notamment à la compréhension de textes variés. Mais est-il réellement possible d’atteindre cet objectif avec les élèves présentant des troubles du développement intellectuel ? Pour apporter des éléments de réponse à cette question, nous avons mené une expérience pilote dans une classe pour l’inclusion scolaire (CLIS) accueillant des élèves âgés de sept à neuf ans. Elle visait à évaluer les effets de la mise en œuvre d’un scénario pédagogique, adapté à leurs besoins particuliers, conçu pour leur apprendre à comprendre un texte long, en mémoriser les événements essentiels et à le raconter. Les résultats recueillis nous permettent de soutenir que les adaptations proposées sont pertinentes puisqu’elles ont produit des effets positifs sur ces trois aspects.
