and FLORA MEADOWS 0 T h is much confiurwn about the meaning and applicability of counselling in relation to social work. At one extreme, virtually all direct work with clients h a been described as cowrselling, whilst others regard counselling as a specialist service fir which social workers need to refir people elsewhere. In this cuticle an attempt is made to clarib the position. We suggest that wunselling phys an imporhnt part but only a part in social work, and takes two main f i r m -person-oriented and advisoiy. Whilst socicrl workers may only sometimes take on a counselling role, the skius lured in counselling can be applied to most social work activities, including indirect work. Often s&l workers haw a mixtwe of roles in relation to the same person or persons, so that the counselling element needs to be negotiated openly at an early stage.
