The use of satellite-based remote sensing systems for observing marine environments is presented. Satellite observations of the marine environment, including weather, support efforts in economic development, national defense, resource management, and policy making, and contribute to
the comfort, health, and safety of the public. Several emerging uses of remote sensing, with applications beyond the scope of conventional marine environmental monitoring, are presented, including: maritime surveillance, international treaty enforcement, oil prospecting, and siting of offshore
wind farms. As a tool, satellite remote sensing has great potential to contribute to the development of sound marine policy and informed decision making.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
