Abstract-In this article we present high spectral efficiency DMT transmissions over 20 m of Step-Index polymethyl methacrylate optical fiber in the visible range. We demonstrated that using illumination light emitting diodes at 450, 520, 560 and 650 nm it is possible to achieve as high as 6.39 bits/s/Hz for a preForward Error Correction with a target Bit Error Rate of 10 -3 . The optical source at 560 nm was developed in our laboratory and then we demonstrated its usage as a new channel in WDM system.
Resumo -Este artigo de Iniciação Científica descreve a montagem e testes de um laser baseado em uma cavidade em figura-de-oito operando no regime de modo travado passivo (passive mode-locking). O dispositivo é formado por um anel de fibra óptica monomodo contendo um amplificador óptico semicondutor (SOA -Semiconductor Optical Amplifier) como meio de ganho. Obteve-se travamento dos modos longitudinais (Mode-Locking) com taxa de repetição dos pulsos na frequência fundamental e harmônicas, todas em MHz (Harmonic Mode-Locking).

The laser is composed by a single-mode fiber optic ring containing an SOA as medium of gain. Mode-Locking was obtained with MHz repetition rate of the fundamental and harmonic frequencies (Harmonic Mode-Locking).
