In several campa&ns between 1949 and 1960 Professor Zorzi carried out a programme of archaeological jkldwork and excavation along the coastal strip of the Gargano peninsula and on the Tremiti Islands, in the course of which a number of important prehistoric sites were discovered and investigated. At the end of this initial period of research he turned his attention to the western landward side of the promontory, where the foothills abut the plain of San Sever0 and where also it was hoped to be able to complete the picture of the regional prehistoric sequence. We are grateful to Mr Lawrence Barfeld of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, for his translation.
