A castração é frequentemente realizada em cadelas com o objetivo de impedir a procriação e controlar doenças do trato reprodutivo. Materiais de sutura como o fio de algodão, têm demonstrado sérias complicações pós-operatórias em cadelas submetidas à castração. Tendo em vista este contexto, o presente artigo, tem como questão norteadora: quais as possíveis consequências ao utilizar o fio de algodão para sutura em ovariosalpingohisterectomia (OSH)? Objetiva-se evidenciar aos profissionais da área que a escolha correta do material cirúrgico a ser utilizado em técnicas de esterilização deve ser criteriosamente estudada, bem como a boa destreza cirúrgica para evitar complicações imediatas e tardias à saúde do animal. Como metodologia, relata-se um caso ocorrido na cidade de Maringá-PR, de uma cadela pastor alemão de 5 anos de idade, submetida à castração, onde foi utilizado para a sutura o fio de algodão, levando o animal a apresentar complicações um ano após a cirurgia, como fístulas cutâneas em flanco direito e esquerdo, seguidas por hidronefrose, incontinência urinária e presença de tecido ovariano funcional por consequência da retirada incompleta do ovário. No caso em questão, o fio de algodão desencadeou a presença de fístulas cutâneas e aderências intra-abdominais, que podem ter levado à hidronefrose do rim esquerdo. Ademais, o ovário remanescente da OSH ocasionou a piometra de coto decorrente. Realizou-se a correção cirúrgica da fístula com a retirada do fio cirúrgico, bem como do granuloma ovariano com resquícios de ovário e nefrectomia para tratar a hidronefrose. A paciente teve boa recuperação cirúrgica, todavia a incontinência urinária persistiu. Concluindo-se, que, embora a OSH seja um procedimento rotineiro na clínica veterinária, a escolha errada do fio de sutura e a imperícia técnica podem acarretar diversas complicações.
