Zinc application in seeds and its effect on germination, nutrition and initial development of sorghumAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of zinc application in sorghum seeds (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) on its nutrition, germination and on the initial development of the plants in greenhouse.A completely randomized design of the treatments was used, in the factorial scheme 2x5, with two cultivars of sorghum (BR 304 and BR 310) and five rates of Zn (0, 3.57, 7.14, 14.28 and 28.56 g of Zn per kg of seeds), with three replicates. The variables of germination (average time, daily average and the speed) were evaluated, and 28 days after sowing dry matter and Zn levels in the aerial part and roots were determined. The Zn application in sorghum seeds did not affect the accumulation of dry matter aerial part, however, it decreased the germination and the accumulation of roots and whole plant dry matter. The Zn applied in sorghum seeds accumulated mainly in the roots. The cultivar BR 304 showed higher Zn absorption and dry matter accumulation than the cultivar BR 310.
ABSTRACTThe experiment was conducted at UNESP-Jaboticabal on the 2001-2002 winter-spring-summer period to evaluate the crude protein, cell wall (NDF, ADF, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) contents, and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of the Tifton 85 alone or overseeded with annual species (oat, pearl millet, and sorghum Sudan grass-SS). It was evaluated the followings treatments: pearl millet plus bristal oat; SS AG2501 C plus bristeal oat, overseeded on Tifton 85 area on 06/19/02, or 07/02/02, and Tifton 85. The data were analyzed according a randomized block design with three repetitions. The CP was highest on the forage harvested at the first evaluation. The cell wall content increased, and IVOMD decreased, in relation to the plant development in booth seeding time. The CP, cell wall contents, and IVOMD changed during the evaluations and seeding time due to the botanical and plants morphological composition.
AG 2501C, no outono e inverno. ABSTRACTThe research was carried out in the Forage Section of FCAV/UNESP-Jaboticabal, to evaluate the chemical composition and the in vitro digestibility of organic matter (IVDOM) of the hybrid sorghum cv. AG 2501C (Sorghum bicolor x Sorghum sudanense) during autumn/winter. The management of pasture was conducted by a simulation of a rotational stocking. The experiment was developed from March to September 2002. The forage was submitted to nine treatments: three nitrogen levels (100, 220 and 300 kg/ ha) and three potassium levels (0, 80 and 160 kg/ha) in a randomized blocks design and split plot. No effect of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on IVDOM was found. Nitrogen had influence on crude protein with values of 15.1, 16.4 and 15.7% of CP and 65.3, 65.8 and 64.5% of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 35.5, 37.8, 39.6% of acid detergent fiber (ADF), for 100, 200 and 300 kg N/ha. The potassium fertilization increased the lignin of plant. We concluded that, the best level was 100 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization, without potassium.
