RESUMENCon motivo de la creación del Parque Nacional Monte León (Santa Cruz, Argentina) y para mitigar el impacto producido por diversos procesos naturales y antrópicos, se llevó a cabo el Proyecto de Rescate Arqueológico Monte León. Se obtuvo información artefactual, arqueofaunística y cronológica, que aporta nuevas evidencias a la discusión del uso humano del espacio en la costa atlántica austral. Se destaca la utilización de distintos recursos marinos y de rocas disponibles localmente. No obstante, también se registraron variedades de obsidianas que enmarcan a Monte León dentro de un circuito mayor de interacción. Las ocupaciones humanas registradas se habrían sucedido desde el Holoceno medio y muestran un fuerte componente tardío (últimos 2000 años AP).

RESUMENSe presentan los primeros resultados arqueológicos sistemáticos obtenidos en las cuencas de los lagos Tar y San Martín (49° 7´ S, 72° 11´ O), focalizados sobre la distribución espacial y temporal del registro. La información se ordena siguiendo las principales unidades ecológicas (estepa, ecotono y bosque) con el fin de discutir la existencia de diferencias en el uso del espacio por parte de las poblaciones cazadoras recolectoras. A la vez, se brindan valores de isótopos estables (δ 13 C y δ 15 N) obtenidos sobre muestras arqueofaunísticas de guanaco (Lama guanicoe) que permiten comenzar a delinear la ecología isotópica regional. Las diferencias en las distribuciones artefactuales articulan un primer modelo del paisaje arqueológico regional que muestra que las mayores intensidades de uso humano se registran en la margen este del lago Tar y en los alrededores del Cerro Cach Aike, decreciendo hacia el oeste (margen sur del lago San Martín). Las ocupaciones humanas se habrían iniciado alrededor de 9700 años AP, manteniéndose de manera discontinua hasta momentos históricos. Por último, se comparan los datos obtenidos con los disponibles en otras cuencas lacustres cordilleranas aledañas, integrando así un nuevo espacio a la discusión del poblamiento humano del suroeste de Patagonia.
El curso inferior del río Penitente se ubica en el sur de la zona de los morros –nacientes del río Gallegos- y es muy poco conocido desde la arqueología. El registro arqueológico de la terraza de la margen este del río muestra tipos artefactuales y materias primas líticas que señalan la interacción con núcleos poblacionales ubicados al noroeste y al este del área de estudio, y con el mar de Otway al sur, durante el Holoceno tardío. La distribución del registro arqueológico es relativamente continua a lo largo del río y da cuenta de una diversidad de contextos que difieren en intensidad y funcionalidad. Así, el conocimiento de esta cuenca añade variabilidad al registro arqueológico del sector de los morros y se brindan nuevas evidencias sobre el uso humano del bosque, relacionado con el reparo que ofrece tanto bajo condiciones de circulación como de mayor permanencia.
En la cuenca del lago San Martín las mayores densidades artefactuales relacionadas con el uso del borde de bosque de Nothofagus se observan sobre la margen sur del lago y corresponden al istmo de la península Maipú. Nueva evidencia del interior del bosque al oeste del istmo muestra concentraciones líticas de baja densidad y riqueza artefactual. La información paleoambiental indica que estos conjuntos siempre estuvieron en el bosque. Se destaca la relativa continuidad espacial de la señal arqueológica y el empleo mayoritario y expeditivo de rocas disponibles localmente. No obstante, el uso de rocas alóctonas (obsidiana y limolita) sugiere la entrada al bosque desde el Este por individuos equipados. Se sostiene la circulación por caminos de menor costo con tránsito ocasional y por corto tiempo. Ello, y la marcada estacionalidad apoya el uso marginal de este ambiente (sensu Borrero 2004). La articulación con el interior del bosque habría sucedido principalmente durante el Holoceno tardío, cuando las cuencas de los lagos Tar y San Martín estaban efectivamente ocupadas (sensu Borrero 1994-1995). La información obtenida es congruente con la registrada en otras cuencas del sur de Santa Cruz y difiere de la de norpatagonia (provincias de Río Negro y Chubut).
