A bronquiolite é amplamente definida como uma síndrome clínica de desconforto respiratório que ocorre em crianças <2 anos de idade e é caracterizada por sintomas respiratórios superiores (por exemplo, rinorreia) seguidos de infecção respiratória inferior com inflamação, que resulta em sibilos e/ou crepitações (estertores). A bronquiolite geralmente ocorre com infecção primária ou reinfecção com um patógeno viral. Em crianças pequenas, o diagnóstico clínico de bronquiolite pode se sobrepor a sibilância induzida por vírus recorrente e asma aguda desencadeada por vírus.
