Forthcoming in Innovations in Education and Teaching International SUMMARYThis paper presents a case study of students" awareness, experiences and perceptions of research in a "new" university in the UK. The findings are based on a questionnaire of almost 200 students and five small group interviews. Many of the students participating in this research perceived clear benefits to their learning from staff research, including being taught by enthusiastic staff, enhanced staff credibility, and the reflected glory of being taught by well-known researchers. However, they also perceived disadvantages, particularly with regard to staff availability and did not believe that staff research should take priority over their needs as learners. They recognised that their awareness of the nature of research and the development of research skills increased most when they were actively involved in undertaking research projects. Several students also perceived benefits for future employment from their participation in research activities. The questionnaire has been used by several other universities around the world to benchmark their practices.

INTRODUCTIONW hen I fi rst became interested in researching the experiences of women travelling alone, the view of those relatively few authors who had at that time examined the gendered nature of tourism was that much previous research in this area had been gender-blind (Enloe, 1989;Bagguley, 1990;Hicks, 1990). During the 1990s and into the 21st century, however, the signifi cant infl uence of gender across all aspects of holiday choice and experience has been acknowledged in a burgeoning fi eld of academic enquiry (see for instance Kinnaird and Hall, 1994;Squire, 1994;Swain, 1995;Marshment, 1997; Pritchard and Morgan, 2000a,b;Fullagar, 2002;Pritchard et al., 2007). Such research has revealed that men and women experience tourism differently (Westwood et al., 2000;Gibson, 2001;Kim and Littrell, 2001;Mattila et al., 2001) and that solo travel for women constitutes both an exceptionally empowering and a uniquely challenging experience (Elsrud, 2005;Jennings, 2005;Jordan and Gibson, 2005;Obenour, 2005;Small, 2005;Wilson and Little, 2005).In addition to such valuable theorising of tourism as gendered practice, there is a growing tourism industry imperative to investigate the requirements and experiences of women travelling alone. The 2001 UK census predicted that 40% of people in the UK will be living in solo households by 2010 and research by the UK tour operator Travelbag has revealed that this growth is now refl ected in their holiday bookings, with a 68% increase in solo bookings during (Starmer-Smith, 2005. This chapter explores the potential connections between representations of tourism in UK women's 'lifestyle' magazines and body imagery. In theorizing the discussion of the links between tourism and body imagery, the chapter draws on the work of Foucault on the power-knowledge-sexuality triplex and the power of the collective social gaze. The discussion centres on topics relating to the creation of what is often referred to in the magazines as a 'beach body' or a 'bikini body'. Three key themes of female bodily representation are identified: the homogenized beach body; the sexualized 'beach babe/beach beauty' body; and the disciplined (bikini boot camp) body.

Tourism is often portrayed by the tourism industry, tourists themselves and tourism scholars as a liminoid site of escape, happiness and freedom from constraint. For many, however, holidays do not live up to this expectation. This paper challenges the dominant tourism discourse of holidays as sites of unproblematic pleasure in examining contestation, conflicts and negotiations between women and their travelling companions. Drawing on conceptualizations of in-group interpersonal conflicts and theorization of the mobile social identities of women travellers, we explore the impact of holiday conflicts on women’s holiday experiences and friendships. The findings of this qualitative study of female tourists from Norway and the UK suggest that women adopt various strategies to deal with open and hidden conflicts that may threaten their friendships and holiday experiences. Such strategies include avoidance of conflict through compromise, negotiation of appropriate holiday behaviours prior to travel, or ultimately choosing to travel solo.
