Rosacea affects patients' lives to a moderate extent, and this can be assessed by using DLQI. DLQI is also sensitive to quality of life changes brought about by treatment of rosacea. As a preliminary result we can say that topical metronidazole, oral tetracycline and oral isotretinoin seem to improve quality of life of patients by improving lesions of rosacea more efficiently than other therapeutic agents.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent and self-limited attacks of fever usually accompanied by polyserositis. Amyloidosis is its most common renal complication. A number of reports have shown vasculitic diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa and Henoch-Schönlein purpura affecting the kidney in FMF. Here we present a patient with FMF and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis and analyze the data published on these two entities.

Alkaptonuria frequently occurs in association with lumbar disc disease. In patients with no other signs of alkaptonuria or ochronosis, early detection of the disease is important to treat involvement of other systems (e.g., cardiovascular and urinary).

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to assess the relationship between expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted in chromosome ten (PTEN), angiogenesis and clinicopathological parameters of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.MethodsWe examined immunohistochemical expression of VEGF and PTEN and CD34 for microvessel density (MVD) in sections of formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue blocks of 140 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The intensity of VEGF and PTEN staining and the proportion of cells staining were scored.ResultsThe tumor grade was not significantly related to PTEN expression, but it was to VEGF expression (p = 0.400; p = 0.015, respectively). While there was no significant relationship between PTEN expression and tumor size and cartilage invasion (p = 0.311, p = 0.128), there was a significant relationship between the severity of VEGF expression and tumor size (p = 0.006) and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.048) but not cartilage invasion (p = 0.129). MVD was significantly higher in high-grade tumors (p = 0.003) but had no significant relationship between MVD, lymph node metastasis, and cartilage invasion (p = 0.815, p = 0.204). There was also no significant relationship between PTEN and VEGF expression (p = 0.161) and between PTEN and VEGF expression and the MVD (p = 0.120 and p = 0.175, respectively).ConclusionsIncreased VEGF expression may play an important role in the outcome of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. PTEN expression was not related to VEGF expression and clinicopathological features of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

Actinomycosis is an infectious disease that frequently has chronic granulomatous and suppurative lesions caused by saprophytic Actinomyces species. Although cervicofacial actinomycosis is known to be the most common type, intraorally and periodontally types occur rarely in a localized fashion. The present case reports on an adult periodontitis patient with a diffuse and atypic actinomycotic lesion which was limited to the gingiva and had an abscess formation, a large desquamation and subsequent exposure of the alveolar bone in the involved region. Diagnosis was based on histopathological examination, the history of the case and clinical nature of the lesion. The patient responded to daily administration of 100 g doxcycycline (first day-bid) for 3 weeks and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate irrigation (following tooth brushing) performed with oral hygiene reinforcement and periodontal debridement procedures. Complete improvement of the lesion was observed after 5 weeks. Due to the opportunistic characteristics of the actinomycotic infection, early and adequate differential diagnosis of actinomycosis prior to therapeutic attempts, as well as management steps, are of great importance in the oral cavity to prevent the spread of the disease.
