THERMAL LOSSES AND THERMAL STRATIFICATION IN A STEEL LADLE AbstractThermal losses are one of the consequences from storing liquid steel in ladles. Controlling liquid steel temperature is essential for achieving a product with high quality. This study evaluates heat transfer from the steel to the refractory of the ladle and the slag layer, using a numerical (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model. Heat losses result in natural convection inside the bath and the typical consequence is the thermal stratification. The results from this study have been compared with data available in the literature and may be used as a guide for forecasting ladle steel temperature. The influence of different parameters such as thickness of the slag layer, type of refractory and the soaking temperature has been taken in consideration. Heat losses to the wall and bottom refractories are larger than thermal losses to the slag layer. Thermal losses are not strongly affected by slag layer thickness; the main influence is due to refractory type and initial soaking temperature.
