Abstract-With increasing levels of stress, competition and insecurities in life, work-life balance issues have become extremely important. Employees are looking for ways that will help them balance between work and personal life effectively. Researchers have also identified that work-life balance leads to positive organizational outcomes.Although work-life balance has been a frequent subject of inquiry in the Western world, there have been no studies on work-life balance in the Sultanate of Oman. Human resources are being considered as vital for the realization of the 'Vision for Oman's National Economy: Oman 2020' laid by the Sultanate, and hence, a study on work-life balance is both timely and relevant. It needs to be understood that teachers are the cornerstone of the development of any society and hence their well-being is important. Therefore, the present study seeks to explore work-life balance and its relation to job satisfaction of teachers in the higher education sector in the Sultanate of Oman.Findings of the study revealed that while work interference with personal life and personal life interference with work had a negative relationship with job satisfaction, work and personal life enhancement had a positive relationship with job satisfaction. Thus, the findings of the present study corroborate with previous research evidence. Thus, we can safely conclude that work and personal life needs to be integrated and balanced by organizations through work-life balance initiatives.Index Terms-Work-life balance, job satisfaction, teacher satisfaction, sultanate of Oman, higher education. I. INTRODUCTIONWork-life balance (WLB) is about finding the right balance between work and life, and about feeling comfortable with both work and family commitments. Work-life balance is essentially the balance between three components, namely, paid work, unpaid work and personal time. There is no one accepted definition of what constitutes a WLB practice, the term usually refers to one of the following factors: organizational support for dependent care, flexible work options and family or personal leave [1].Reference
The human resource management (HRM), once responsible for record keeping and maintenance, has evolved into a strategic partner. This has led to the emergence of the concept of strategic human resource management (SHRM). Despite the increasing importance of SHRM, there is still a paucity of empirical evidences from the emerging nations. Keeping in mind the fact that India is one of the fastest growing markets today, a need was felt to explore the SHRM terrain in the Indian context. On the basis of an extensive literature review, four types of fit vis-à-vis SHRM were identified. Collectively called the SHRM Inventory, these were empirically tested to establish unidimensionality, reliability, and validity. Thereafter, the four types of fit were linked to effectiveness of HRM function and organizational performance using Structural Equation Modeling capabilities of LISREL. Mixed support was found for the hypothesized relationships. This study has implications for both academicians and practitioners. The contributions of this study include the development of a reliable and valid instrument, namely, the SHRM Inventory, which is expected to aid researchers in the analysis of SHRM in other countries. The study is expected to serve as a guide in understanding the status of SHRM in India, as opposed to studies in traditional HR areas that have been the focus of research in India till now.
PurposeDramatic changes are constantly shaping the business world. Business in such bizarre settings requires shooting on moving targets. The need to constantly rejuvenate organizations for enduring strategic advantage mandates an out‐and‐out adoption of the learn‐unlearn‐relearn (LUR) model. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the paradigm shifts in the extant literature on the three concepts and then attempts to club the three. It also introduces the concept of the FAST culture symbolized by flexibility, agility, steadfastness and tactfulness in the light of LUR model. Further it takes up a discussion of the strategic nuances, barriers and prerequisites involved in implementing the LUR model.Design/methodology/approachThe paper bases itself on extensive review of literature and industry experience, citing several examples to drive home the central idea of the thesis.FindingsIt is concluded that adopting the LUR model requires a gradual and steady process of strategic transformation. It requires challenging old assumptions and creating newer layers of assumptions. The approach to LUR has to be seamlessly beaded with the firm's line of attack.Practical implicationsThe paper will provide insights to strategic decision leaders vis‐à‐vis implementation of LUR model and its utility to the organization.Originality/valueThe paper proposes and introduces the LUR model as an important modern‐day imperative for organizations and has supplemented the idea with relevant examples and arguments. The paper also introduces the concept of the FAST culture.
Among higher education students, perceived employability gained eminence in the last decades that attracted scholarly interests. Researchers theoretically and empirically studied the perceived employability though; inadequate preliminary review studies exist on this topic. Available researches mostly concentrated on a single approach. Thus, this study carried out a comprehensive review that comprised a systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis that might boost understandings in the body of the literature. In the research process, the Scopus database from the 2008 to 2021 periods was used. The researchers set the search criteria that allowed the inclusion of 59 papers published in 45 peer-reviewed international journals. The paramount influential papers and prolific authors formulated the unit of this analysis. Furthermore, for the identification of thematic clusters and creating network maps, VOS viewer software was deployed. Citation analysis, co-authorship analysis, co-citation analysis, and co-occurrence of keywords analysis have generated interesting patterns which articulate the study results. The findings revealed enlightening insights on the content and characteristics of perceived employability, publication trends, highly cited papers, productive authors, contributing countries, repetitive themes, productive journals, and also unveiled gaps providing avenues for upcoming research works.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
