EVALUATION OF BANANA GENOTYPES IN THE NORTH OF THE STATE OF PARANAABSTRACT -The aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of fourteen genotypes of banana tree, in the North Region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. The experiment was installed and carried out, without irrigation, in a commercial field located in Andirá, PR, Brazil, from 2007 to 2009. A completely randomized design with eight replications and one plant per parcel was used. The genotype FHIA 17 was outstanding of the rest presenting the best set of agronomic characters. The genotypes PA42-44, PV94-01 and 'BRS Princesa' presented similar characteristics to the comercial varieties 'Prata Anã', 'Pacovan' and 'Maçã', respectively, being alternatives of grow by its resistance to the black and yellow sigatokas and Fusarium wilt. Index terms: Musa spp., cultivars, hybrids, black sigatoka.
Banana streak virus (BSV) and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) are commonly found in all banana growing-areas of the world. These viruses cause diseases that lead to yield reduction and constrain plant breeding and distribution of Musa germplasm. Most of the diagnostic methods targeting BSV can generate dubious results because of the considerable genetic and serological diversity among BSV isolates and the presence of integrated BSV sequences in the banana plant. Both viruses are usually detected in single and mixed infections in banana plantations in the north region of Paraná state using DAS-ELISA and PCR. A rolling-circle amplification protocol tested in this study allowed specific detection and identification of an episomal BSV isolate infecting Nanicão Jangada cultivar, thus confirming the occurrence of Banana streak OL virus in Brazil.
In this study, we aimed to investigate Cosmopolites sordidus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae ) infestation among different banana genotypes in a commercial banana orchard over the course of 30 months. Banana root borer infestation was compared in 20 banana genotypes, including five varieties and 15 hybrids. Overall, we observed that 94.17% of pest infestation cases occurred in the cortex region, and only 5.83% occurred in the central cylinder. Genotypes least sensitive to infestation were the Prata Anã (AAB) and Pacovan (AAB) varieties, where no damage was recorded. Among the hybrid genotypes, PV 9401 and BRS Fhia 18 showed intermediate levels of sensitivity, while BRS Tropical hybrids (AAAB), PA 9401 (AAAB), BRS Vitoria (AAAB), YB 4203 (AAAB), and Bucaneiro (AAAA) were the most sensitive to attack by banana root borer. This study demonstrated that the infestation of the banana root borer varies according banana plant genotype, and the utilization of less susceptible genotypes could reduce infestation rates of C. sordidus.
