Introducción: Los algoritmos están en casi todos los procesos de interacción y coordinación para completar tareas físicas y mentales exigentes a futuro, suponiendo en medicina, el paso de los algoritmos biológicos a los artificiales con eliminación del error y un manejo óptimo de la información con mayor beneficio para el humano. Objetivo: Determinar la percepción de la utilidad en la aplicación de la teoría de algoritmos para la solución a problemas clínicos mediante la aplicación del razonamiento algorítmico. Material y método: Para evaluar la percepción de la aplicación de la teoría de algoritmos en la solución a problemas clínicos, teóricos y reales, se exploró la percepción de la utilidad de la teoría de algoritmos en estudiantes de la carrera de medicina, mediante la aplicación de encuestas previas y posteriores a una intervención educativa. Resultados: Posterior a la intervención, la percepción de los estudiantes es que la mayoría (más del 70%) considera que los algoritmos son indispensables para los médicos, que su uso es evidente en la literatura médica y que es necesario tener un conocimiento profundo del tema a tratar. En cuanto a la utilidad para el aprendizaje, la mayoría (más del 60%) considera que sirven para describir o recordar un tema, para explicar o resumir, y para organizar y establecer soluciones a un problema. Las opiniones del estudiantado fueron predominantemente positivas para la utilidad de los algoritmos. Conclusión: La teoría de algoritmos proporciona una alternativa metodológica de aprendizaje, pues se integran distintas áreas del conocimiento médico, proporcionando una o varias vías de solución, que ayudan a la descripción o explicación de la patología, o para su aplicación en un contexto real de atención al paciente.
